Confession time.

Although my family is filthy rich, I have no solid knowledge of how the rock stars of today spend their money. Politicians and entertainers have different priorities. I suspect some of it is wasted on banal things like drugs, overpriced clothes, and flashy jewelry, but truth is I’m not sure Kai can be considered a rock star. Mainly because the concept died years ago along with everything the music genre itself represented as a mainstream locomotive but also because he doesn’t look or act like one most of the time.

And he drives a Dodge Grand Caravan.

It’s one of the latest models, all black and shiny with tinted windows. In the dark if you’re tired and not looking closely, you could almost mistake it for a Navigator.

But if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck… You know what I’m saying, right?

It’s basically still a duck.

Or a minivan.

The kind of vehicle a thirtysomething suburban dad would pick so he could take his kids and in-laws to church every Sunday.

Somehow this little piece of information distorts the entire image of Kai I’ve had in my head ever since the moment I laid my eyes on him for the first time that night at the warehouse.

“Nice ride,” I comment as we climb inside.

He shoots me a stare and then proceeds to buckle up and it’s all very normal—the slam of the door, the rustle of his clothes, the clank of the phone in the cupholder, the purr of the engine. Even the crunch of the tires against the asphalt. It’s all so mundane that I’m scared I’ve already fallen into whatever trap this is.

On some nights he demands blood as part of a ritualistic sacrifice and on other nights he just drives an average car.

“It does the job,” Kai says a few heartbeats later, his face a sturdy mask of calm.

“It sure does.”

We descend into one of those abnormally long moments of silence that happen between us a lot. There’s no rule book on how to act around a person whose nose you broke, so keeping to myself seems like the safest bet, even if I desperately want to ask him where we’re going. Only I already have a pretty good idea, so I leave it at that.

I let him be in the lead.

For once.

After a few bumpy turns, we reach the interstate and jump on 405 heading south. Even at this hour, with the fog steadily getting thicker, the wide expanse of the road cutting through the blanket of green is busy. It’s a blinking, roaring stream of cars driving at breakneck speeds, hurrying to get to their destinations, and I feel even more detached from the world despite hundreds of lives whizzing by.

My heartbeat is back to normal but I’m still nervous, probably more than I’ve ever been in my life. That’s why the question that comes out of my mouth next makes little sense.

“Why Iodine?”

“What do you mean?” Kai throws me a quick sideways glance. His knuckles are white, a definite contradiction to his relaxed posture.
